Santa Fe MPO Pedestrian Master Plan

Santa Fe, New Mexico

The first undertaking of its kind for Santa Fe, the Santa Fe Metropolitan Pedestrian Master Plan (PMP) serves as a guide for improving the walking environment within the Santa Fe Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) area. The plan analyses existing conditions, identifies improvement needs and areas of critical concern, outlines policy changes, and guides the development of the pedestrian environment within the Santa Fe Metropolitan Planning Area. The purpose of the plan is to provide strategies that increase the number of pedestrians in Santa Fe by improving connectivity, safety, convenience, and the attractiveness of the pedestrian environment.

The PMP not only looks at existing physical conditions, but also considers public perception of the pedestrian environment. An extensive public outreach effort and input process collected over 1,100 surveys / comments on where improvements were needed and documented areas of concern. A Working Group of citizens, public and private agency representatives, special interest groups, and professionals guided the prioritization of improvement projects and identification of key design goals. The Pedestrian Master Plan supports a shift in thinking about the street environment that moves us from a car-centric approach to a multi-modal, comprehensive approach where pedestrians are not marginalized but accommodated and encouraged to walk in a safe and pleasing environment.
