POJOAQUE VALLEY RECREATION CENTER

Pojoaque, New Mexico

Formerly a set of worn and well-used ball fields, the 11-acre Pojoaque Valley Recreation Complex was purchased by Santa Fe County and transformed into a vibrant community park in the heart of this rural agricultural community. Situated along the Rio Tesuque, the site is marked by the ‘Bosque’, a stand of mature cottonwood trees along the river edge, and stunning views of the Barancas and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

With the intention of increasing the diversity of park offerings and appealing to a broader community, park program elements were expanded beyond recreational fields. Initial upgrades to the multi-purpose field and restroom / concessions building were complemented with clearly defined pedestrian circulation and gathering area improvements, a new parking lot, and perimeter access control. Future planned improvements include a shaded pedestrian promenade, picnic areas, a ¾ mile walking trail, and an agricultural demonstration area featuring some of the many heritage fruit trees that thrive in this area.
