CNM CAMPUS WAYFINDING

Albuquerque, New Mexico

A new pedestrian promenade for Central New Mexico Community College’s main campus provides a safe and generous connection between an extensive parking lot to the west and the core of the main campus. An elegant shade structure and wide walkway guides students to key entry points in the campus and provides opportunities for outdoor classrooms, a food truck court, a faculty garden, and places to people watch.

The landscape design complements the architectural components with sweeps of native grasses and plants. The new entry landscape along University Boulevard serves as a water collection basin that infiltrates site stormwater. Plantings in this area are a diverse mix of riparian plants that can survive periods of drought and provide habitat for native wildlife species. The stepped garden internal to the campus provides culinary ingredients such as herbs, cacti, and berries that support the institution’s culinary curriculum. A section of this garden also includes medicinal plants such as echinacea, chamomile, and ephedra.
