Thornton Ranch Open Space Master Plan
Galisteo, New Mexico
The Thornton Ranch Open Space, a 2,440-acre area in the heart of the Galisteo Basin, lies within one of the most culturally significant landscapes in New Mexico. A quintessential New Mexico landscape with native grasses and pinon / juniper cover, the property has been a place of human passage for over 3,000 years. Evidence exists of multiple layers of history and activity spanning from ancient puebloan times (Archaic Period 1000 B.C.), to Spanish Colonial, ranching, railroad era, to present day. A portion of the property is designated as one of 24 sites within the Galisteo Basin federally protected under the Galisteo Basin Archaeological Sites Protection Act.
The master plan for the Thornton Ranch Open Space property serves as a guide for opening access to the public by developing recreational trails and associated amenities, interpreting ecological and historical features, while preserving cultural resources and conserving this unique landscape. The plan outlines opportunities for revealing some of the stories behind this changing landscape through interpretive signage and educational programs. The plan was developed thoughtfully in close consultation with the landowners, tribal representatives, recreational user groups, and community members to generate a balanced, appropriate approach for this important resource.
