ROCKWIND COMMUNITY LINKS INTERPRETIVE AND WAYFINDING SIGNAGE

Hobbs, New Mexico

The Rockwind Community Links is a recently revitalized municipal golf course in Hobbs, New Mexico built upon the footprint of the retired Hobbs Army Airfield in service from 1942-1948. Over it’s short lifetime, the base was a training center for B-17 bombers, the pre-eminate long range bomber during World War II. Consequently, the base employed many civilians and housed hundreds of soldiers, greatly impacting Hobbs and the surrounding area.

In 2013 Rockwind Community Links was redesigned to provide residents recreational and community activities that add to the site’s program offerings while complementing golfcourse amenities. One of the site’s greatest attributes is the non-paved perimeter trail and trailheads designed by Design Office. The trail circumnavigates the course and purposefully brings users in contact with base remnants, such as footings and building pads, that mark the site’s expansive campus of offices, residence, warehouses and hangers. Design Office worked closely with local historians, including the Lovington Historical Society, to develop interpretive signage, a timeline, and wayfinding elements that reveal attributes of this overlooked cultural landscape.
