Acequia Trail – Rufina Street to San Felipe Road
Santa Fe, New Mexico
An extension of the existing Acequia Trail in the southwest section of town provides a major link to existing and planned future urban trails in this underserved part of Santa Fe. The new 1-mile urban trail makes use of an abandoned ROW easement, transforms it into a landscaped parkway, and directly connects to two major urban trails (River Trail, El Camino Real Trail) that extend for miles. The trail serves as a recreation zone directly accessible from adjacent low-income neighborhoods with over 800 homes and 2,000 residents. A new trailhead at the junction of the Acequia Trail and El Camino Real Trail provides broader access to the urban trail network.
Landscape rehabilitation within the 80-ft wide trail easement will focus on restoration, biodiversity, and habitat enhancement. Stormwater will be carefully managed to collect and infiltrate in designated vegetated zones and help irrigate a range of native and drought-tolerant plant species.
