Romero Park Master Plan

Agua Fria Village Santa Fe, New Mexico

Romero Park (formerly known as Agua Fria Park) is an existing 15-acre park within a 82 acre area of public land in the traditional Village of Agua Fria along the Santa Fe River in Santa Fe County. Over a span of 30 years, needed community facilities have located on the property, including a regional fire station, family medical center, parks maintenance facility, sheriff’s residence, and community center.

Through an open and collaborative pubic process, a combination of existing facility upgrades and new park uses were identified to address the needs of the growing local community. The Romero Park Master Plan provides a vision for a park that cohesively links park elements with community amenities and the future Santa Fe River Greenway corridor. The plan addresses desires of the local community for a combination of traditional neighborhood uses (equestrian facilities, orchard, food production garden, grassland prairie) and traditional park uses (multi-purpose sports fields, playgrounds, lawn areas, picnic shelters, etc.). Park elements are organized around a central circulation / drainageway corridor that links park activities and connects to the Santa Fe River. Active park elements are concentrated north of Caja del Oro Grant Road above the river embankment, allowing passive park uses and grassland / riparian restoration on the remainder of the site. Once implemented, these improvements will help make Romero Park a significant public open space and recreation destination on the east side of town
